Birchwood Sports Partnership Cheerleading Competition 2016
On Friday 14th October, the St Michael’s Cheerleading Squad entered our first ever BSP Cheerleading Competition. The squad was comprised of 14 girls from Years 4, 5 and 6 who have spent their Friday lunchtimes since September practising hard to perfect their routines with the help of our coach Cressida Macdonald-Williams (Cressy to the girls!). The squad was required to perform a group routine of up to 3 minutes to music of their choice (we chose the Mission Impossible theme tune) and each routine had to include at least one of the following:
* Low Level Stunt (with at least 2 bases, one spotter and one flyer)
* Gymnastics (e.g. this could be one child doing a cartwheel)
* Transition (moving between different formations)
* Synchronised dance movements
Points were awarded for all the above as well as for the overall performance.
The squad looked very professional in their red and white team kit and after warm-up sessions and then a practise round where Cressy went through the routines with the squad, we were ready to perform our final piece. There were three other schools taking part (Manor Fields, Northgate and Little Hadham) who were all experienced competition goers so we were feeling very nervous at this point!
I have only ever seen cheerleading sessions in films and never live so this was a real treat for me and all the families that came along to support the squad. What followed was the most amazing 3 minutes of acrobatics, gymnastics, dance and most importantly team work. The squad performed to a really high standard and what was particularly noticed by the judges and the audience was their team work and how tight this made their performance. After a nail-biting 5 minutes wait, the results were announced and to our great delight and excitement St Michael’s were the winners.
I would like to say a huge thank you to all our fantastic supporters who came along to not only cheer and encourage the squad but also help with hair and make-up. Also a very big thank you to Cressy for all her hard work and encouragement. We only started the Cheerleading Club in January so it is a huge achievement to have won our first competition.
Lastly, a massive congratulations to our hugely talented St Michael’s Cheerleading squad. Go St Michaels!!
I hope you enjoy looking at the photos!
